Re: It's UNIX. What more do you need to know? www.sun.com has all kinds of datasheets, etc. What exactly are you planning on doing? Solaris x86 has poor support for commodity hardware, and Linux/BSD can do just about everything that you'd want Solaris to do.
Re: Follow oalee's instructions-- they're spot on for what you're looking to do.
Re: It's quite possible that dust has accumulated in the system. Along with what everything else suggested, I'd recommend inspecting your power supply fan, along with the processor's fan. Heat can definitely slow down a system-- I'd begin to suspect hardware since you indicated this happens outside of Windows.
Re: you might want to consider taking that hard drive out of the system, placing it another system, and retrieving the files you need off of it. Then, consider reinstalling Windows. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode yet? Hit the Ctrl key as you boot up Windows, and it should …
Re: I'm guessing it would be on either your Windows 98 CD, or on your ISP installation Cd. Have you tried a file search on either of those locations?
Re: Have you disconnected all peripherals? I'd also find out what option resets the BIOS defaults on the system. It may not even hurt to consider updating the BIOS revision on the laptop to the latest version from NEC's website.
Re: VMWare or other virtualisation software may not always be the ideal choice. For many, directly booting into the host OS is the best option, for the sake of performance. If you run FAT32 on your Primary partition on your Primary master disk, you can install XOSL: http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm It's a really …
Re: Try to get us more error messages. Maybe then we can help you out. But, I'm of the same mind as manutdrule1990: Back up your data, find your original installation media, and prepare to have Windows reinstalled. It might be your best bet, considering what all you've got going on.
Re: What are the specs on this "older computer"? Do we even know if it meets the minimum requirements for XP?
Re: What is the error code at the bottom? It should say STOP: 0x000000## under Technical information. Get us that information, and we can probablt help out more. Also, let us know what peripherals are attached, and the details (type of motherboard, etc), of your hardware.
Re: What have you tried so far to resolve this? It could be anything, at this point-- a bad video card, or it could even be a bad processor, power supply, or motherboard.
Re: Are the LEDs installed correctly? Try swapping them around on their pin headers. You might have just put them on backwards...
Re: More than likely, it's going to be blank. That's my guess if you've never installed Windows.
Re: I Dont Really Think That Any One Is Going To Talk To You With Such An Annoying Capitialization Habit. Why Not Post Your Question Here And Have Us All Help You Out Here? Be Sure To Not Use So Many CAPS When You Reply.
Re: if you can't find your Windows CD, you're probably going to be out of luck, unfortunately. I wouldn't trust downloading that program from anywhere on the web, considering that it's such a critical system file...
Re: See if this link helps you out: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=61 Look at the "Using the System Configuration Tool Method" under Windows 98/ME. That should be the fix you're looking for. Just uncheck the box it's telling you to check, if it's there.
Re: keep in mind that your computer might not work that well with Windows 98... That computer was "Designed for Windows XP"-- usually that translates to "Too lazy to make drivers for the other OSes"
Re: Have you tried changing the BIOS settings to "Load Failsafe Defaults"? See how that works out for you before going for a reinstall. Either that, or remove the CMOS jumper on the motherboard and restore the BIOS defaults that way.
Re: You probably just need to replace the fan. Fans can be replaced with most any 80mm (or same size) fan available on the market. When picking fans, you can choose the amount of noise by the dB (decibel) level they produce.
Re: I'm thinking that a 33MB file isn't going to yield very good results coming down over a phone line. Do you ever lose connection on your modem?
Re:
No. If you're too lazy to do it then you deserve a failing grade.
Exactly. Please show your work, and we'll help you troubleshoot your code.
Re: Please post your own work. This is a homework assignment-- it's obvious from the way it's phrased.
Re: What diskette/disc are you booting from? That's not Linux-- that's DOS. I've never had a Mandrake installation look like that...
Re: Don't cross post. Check out my answer in the other Linux forum you posted here: http://daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread25371.html closing thread.
Re: I don't ever recall having that problem with my vfat partitions when running Red Hat 9. Try changing the line:
/dev/hda<number> /mnt/win_c <vfat or msdos> defaults 0 2
to
/dev/hda<number> /mnt/win_c <vfat or msdos> defaults 0 0
I'm betting that the 2 is causing fsck to run …
Re: Sorry-- you need the CD. that's going to be the only way to get all of the needed registry keys installed for the game.
Re: Have you tried clearing the CMOS jumper on your motherboard, to clear any settings that you might have made in the BIOS?
Re: If I'm looking for a full-featured environment, I'll go with Gnome. Otherwise, I'm SUPER SUPER minimalistic, running ion. I've got two 19" Dell Trinitron monitors running at 1600x1200. It's amazing how many Xterms you can stuff into a setup like that when you've divided your screen up via frames.
![]() | Re: Got any links? I've never heard of one, but with a lifetime warranty, I would at least consider dropping one in a server box that I'd never touch. <edit> Just checked out their website, did a Google search. Never used one, or know anybody that used one, but if you … |
Re: Are you wanting to span the video? If so, I'm afraid that's not going to happen. Most video cards have a setting called "overlay", and it's only usable on one display at a time on most cards. There might be some cards that can do it, but they're likely to …
Re: Just curious... What process jumps up to 100% when it spikes like this?
Re: Can you post the code of the form? Did you need support for other languages?
Re: Does the drive open if you restart your computer, or go into your BIOS? I've heard of situations like this, where a program is demanding access to the drive, and won't let it go. Usually, uninstalling the offending program resolves the issue. I'd try pulling Nero out, and if InCD …
Re:
Unfortunately, I do not know further on how to do a conditional at the command prompt... I usually write a short bash script that has if/then/else logic nice and neatly formatted.
You'd just write the same thing at the prompt, just use semicolons instead of carriage returns:
… | |
Re: It depends on the motherboard you're getting. One's a Socket A, and one's Socket 754. Those are different processor socket types. Personally, I wouldn't fool with either of those-- if you're building a computer, I'd look for a motherboard/processor setup that uses Socket 939, as AMD is or will be …
Re: Are you running some kind of CD burning software, like Direct CD, or DLA? If so, uninstall and reinstall it.
Re: You need a DVI to VGA adapter. They're available at most computer stores; if you can't find one locally, try froogle, or newegg.
Re: Have you tried re-flashing your DVD burner, perhaps in Safe Mode? It sounds like you might not have correctly installed the update.
Re: You will have to get a 4-pin to 3-pin adapter: http://www.heatsinkstore.com/4to3ad.html Then, you can use any adapter that uses a 3 pin header on it. That additional 3-pin cable running off of the fan is a Tachometer wire, which you can connect to the fan header on the motherboard, for …
Re: Does it work on another system? You could very well be looking at a physical problem with the camera, requiring replacement.
Re: Try this link out here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767 What other programs does this happen in during installation?
Re: I'm not so sure you can do that. He's basically sending an HTML file to you that says to play music in the background. If you want the possibility of hearing the sound, you'd have to provide a URL for the sound, rather than an attached file. Using a URL …
Re:
Hmmm, I'm wondering why Netios over tcpip is disabled in your second adaptor, still I should think you would be able to get an IP. My personal favorite of little dsl routers is a Linksys with 4port switch built in. They've proven cheap and reliable and easy to configure.
NetBIOS … | |
Re: I've successfully run Win98,2k, Slackware, Mandrake, and FreeBSD, all on the same machine. Of course, I had 2 30GB drives in my system. I used a program called XOSL (eXtended Operating System Loader) to boot between the OSes, so I didn't have to fool with configuring the multitude of other …
Re: 98 won't run NTFS. Your only choice would be to run FAT32 on any partition larger than 2GB under 98.
Re: If working without extensions turned on has an impact, then the best route is to open Extension Manager, and turn extensions on one-by-one. When the system freezes up, you just disable the one that you just turned on. It's an arduous process, but it should turn something up for you.
Re:
Sorry for being slow but is this a free number? Any thoughts on why it was doing this. Thanks L.
Just to add to this, yes, it's a toll-free number. When you tell it to activate over the phone, it asks you your country, and then it gives you the …
Re: Have you written any code yourself towards reaching this goal? Your question is a little vague. Please post more information, and some code, and I'm sure someone here can help you out.
Re: My recommendation would be the Dell Axim line of PDAs. They're really cheap at the Dell outlet: http://www.dell.com/outlet Now, I do have to lay a disclaimer that I do have affilliation with the above company, but my recommendation comes from the fact that I'm posting in this thread from my …
Re: FreeBSD is just like Linux, in the respect that support is only stable in a read-only environment. You'll want to have some kind of FAT32 partition, or a network share, if you want to move data between the two OSes. |
The End.
