yeah, I've been using Avast since 8 years and it doesn't slow your pc and much better than other paid antiviruses.
you need to get used to windows 8 and its a bit faster than windows 7.
Re: installation
you should be able to install windows 8 without any problem provided that you have met all the minimum requirements.
change your system configuration and install x64 version otherwise you won't be able to use all the 8GB RAM
