The page file should not be more than 1.5 times the amount of RAM in the machine, if it is your system will start to slow down and it will be paging all the time.
I would power down the machine and check all the onnectiond between the mother board and the C: drive to make sure they are not loose. When you boot up the work station can you get to the bios and check to see if the drive is recognized there?
Try formatting using a Windows XP CD, or a linux live CD like Ubuntu.
If you are comfortable with opening the computer you could try taking out all the hardware, leaving only the power supply and mother board in the case. Then replace your video card and the minimum ammount of ram for your OS. Then try to power on your PC. This will …
