You really have to be in the zone to work with linux. Once there, it's hard to use microsoft again.
I found a clear out of all temp files speeded up my laptop considerably.
My advice is to download 'Thinking in Java' by bruce Eckle. It's a weighty read, but for java programming you need a solid understanding of how you can use objects to solve many problems.
