Unfortunately since you don't have a domain controller you'll have to enable the 'GUEST' account (quick and dirty fix). Also, check your network adapter properties to ensure File and Printer sharing is enabled, along with your Firewall settings (File and Printer settings ALLOWED).

Open up your case and 'RESET' the BIOS to defaults and see if it will turn on. If so, could have been a bad BIOS setting. Also, check all your cables (internal and external) ;)

Check your proxy settings under 'Internet Options'. Have you tried Firefox to access SSL sites and did it work?

Fortinet makes a Firewall/Router all-in-one device called FORTIGATE. Most of their models have DUAL WAN ports which you could use to do exactly that ;) . Their devices include AV/IDS/Anti-Spam/+MORE services, so it's really a good investment too... I'd recommend the FG-100/100A, please check their website for more details: www.fortinet.com …

Did you install any new applications? If so, uninstall them when in safe mode. Otherwise, I'd run an online virus scan (never know), try: housecall.trendmicro.com

Gateway might have their own proprietary Wireless application installed; take a look in the taskbar. You might want to give them a call -- Sorry I can't suggest anything else, as I've never used a Gateway laptop :(

You could use Microsoft ISA (proxy) along with a simple ASP form. I'm sure there are other 'free' solutions, but I know this one works ;)

If your modem recognized under 'Device Manager'? If not, you'll need to install the proper drivers before you use it.

Do you have the latest drivers installed? Check out www.nvidia.com. That could be the cause of your problems. Also, do you have the latest CHIPSET drivers installed? VIA/SIS/etc...
