also there may be a lack of linux viruses but linux mail servers etc... can give windows viruses to windows clients
It could be an extension. Try booting with extensions disabled.
I can add new items to the desktop but when I try to open them, get the busy signal, ie its working, but nothing, can't see anything.

Sounds like you may have picked up a trojan. Try this program, see if it helps; It's called "Trojan Remover"
