Have a look at the htaccess.txt file. I think that file contains some code which redirects to your index.htm file instead of the index.php file of Joomla.
I would advice to use the Component "DOCman" for the paid/subscribed content. With that you can have paid memberships in order to upload and download certain content or files. And for the thumbnail bit you can use sigplus as mentioned before.
