Try pressing the option key. You should get a list of available "System Folders". If you don't, I'd say running either Disk First Aid or similar to fix it.

Direct3D is a part of DirectX. There are other open-standards and open-source alternatives to DirectX, such as SDL [url]www.libsdl.org[/url] and OpenAL for DirectSound and DirectSound3D

The cause of this is that your mac isn't finding a bootable partition with a "System Folder". This may be caused by a corrupt hard drive or missing files. The easiest way to check is to boot from an OS install CD and check the hard drive.
