Javascript is a good place to start - it's still being used and introduces curly-brace syntax programming. It's pretty simple, also. Perl is great, but it's intentionally too flexible for an absolute beginner. Javascript is more standardized.

It wouldn't be BAD to buy an Apple, but it's not the dominant platform out there. (though OS X does come prepackaged with Perl). You'd probably be better off sticking with the PC platform, learning a bunch of skills, and later on apply those skills to Apples.
