I have windows XP as my primary OS and an older version of windows on a different partition (i keep it for some programes that don't work on XP) and everything is running smoothly

do you see your hard drives in BIOS? are they IDE or SATA?

yea, the i7 is definetly a better buy. sony items are usually more expensive than they're worth just because they have the name "sony". The alienware looks better and has a better video card. and i7 is better and newer than core 2 duo

i've had a similar problem, and after replacing a few parts it has occured to me that it may be the power supply...and it was! so you may check if everything is ok with it...
